Description
Crested Gecko (Correlophus ciliatus)
Adorable. Easygoing. Perfect for beginners and pros alike!
Crested Geckos—often called “cresties”—are one of the most popular pet reptiles in the world, and for good reason! These charming, big-eyed geckos come in a wide range of colors and patterns (called “morphs”) and are known for their gentle nature, ease of care, and fun personalities.
Originally from New Caledonia, they were once thought to be extinct until rediscovered in the 1990s. Now they’re thriving in the pet world!
Quick Facts:
Size: 8–10 inches including tail
Lifespan: 15–20 years in captivity
Temperament: Calm, handleable, and curious
Experience Level: Excellent for beginners
Care & Habitat:
Crested Geckos thrive in vertical enclosures with plenty of climbing surfaces like cork bark, branches, and plants. A 20-gallon tall tank (or larger) is ideal. They prefer room temperatures between 72–78°F, and do not need special heating or lighting in most homes. Humidity should stay between 50–70%, with misting 1–2 times daily to maintain moisture and provide hydration.
Feeding:
These geckos are omnivorous and eat a convenient powdered diet mixed with water (commercial “Crested Gecko Diets”), along with occasional live insects like crickets or dubia roaches for enrichment. Super easy!
Fun Fact:
Crested Geckos can stick to glass, drop their tails if threatened (though they don’t grow back), and they “blink” by licking their eyes!
Why You’ll Love Them:
Crested Geckos are a joy to keep—low maintenance, no need for special lighting, and full of personality. Their expressive faces, sticky toes, and quirky behaviors make them a favorite for kids, families, and experienced reptile lovers alike. With so many colors and morphs to choose from, there’s a crestie for everyone!
