Description
Aberrant California Kingsnake
Long referred to as a subspecies of the "getula/getulus" species, modern taxonomy has elevated this snake to full species. It is found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, not just California. It is highly variable and both striped and banded forms occur in the wild and different populations and morphs have long been selectively bred for in captivity. Kingsnakes get their name for their fondness on snakes, including venomous species, as prey, but captive specimens readily accept appropriately sized rodents. These are docile and hardy snakes that are one of the better species for beginners, but are loved by keepers of all experience levels.
