Description
Amel Terresa Cornsnake
The Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus) of the southeastern United States is considered by many to be the best pet snake. Attractively colored and patterned, its docile nature, moderate adult size, and fairly simple care has made this rat snake incredibly popular. It has been selectively bred for decades, and the variety of available color and pattern morphs and geographic variants is astounding. Also known as the Red Rat Snake, this beneficial constrictor is primarily a predator of rats, mice and other rodents, but also consumes birds, lizards and eggs. Its habitat is varied but it is best known from palmetto flatwoods or pine savannas, fields and meadows, and abandoned buildings and farms. It is a capable climber that can be found in trees and barns or other structures. Especially abundant in Florida, Georgia and Alabama, the Corn Snake ranges throughout the southeast, up the eastern coast to New Jersey and west through the south-central states to the Great Plains where it is replaced by the closely related Great Plains Rat Snake (P. emoryi), as well as west along the Gulf Coast to Louisiana where it is replaced in western Louisiana and adjacent Texas by Slowinski’s Corn Snake (P. slowinskii).
