Basic Care Info:
• Enclosure: A 20-gallon tank is sufficient for adults, though larger enclosures (40-gallon) are ideal for better enrichment. The enclosure should have secure ventilation and a lid to prevent escape.
• Lighting: Although Arizona Mountain Kingsnakes do not require UVB lighting, a day/night light cycle of 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness is necessary for proper behavioral health.
• Temperature: A basking spot should be around 85–90°F (29–32°C), with the cooler end of the enclosure at 75–80°F (24–27°C). Nighttime temperatures can drop to around 70°F (21°C).
• Humidity: Moderate humidity levels of 40–60% should be maintained. Ensure a shallow water dish for hydration and mist the enclosure occasionally.
• Substrate: Use aspen bedding, cypress mulch, or coco coir for a clean, easy-to-maintain environment. Provide areas to hide and climb, as kingsnakes are naturally secretive and like to feel secure.
• Diet: Feed a variety of appropriately sized rodents, such as mice and rats. Hatchlings typically eat pinky mice, while adults can consume larger prey. Feed adults once every 7–10 days.
• Shedding: Ensure your snake has access to a humid hide during shedding periods to help with the process. If necessary, lightly mist the enclosure to increase humidity during shedding.
The Arizona Mountain Kingsnake is not only an excellent pet for snake enthusiasts due to its docile nature and striking appearance, but it also has relatively simple care requirements. With proper care, it can live for 15–20 years, offering a rewarding and long-term companion for any reptile lover.
