Cornsnake (Pantherophis guttatus)
Colorful, calm, and the perfect pet snake for beginners and beyond!
Cornsnakes are one of the most popular pet reptiles for good reason—they’re gentle, easy to care for, and come in a wide variety of beautiful color morphs. Native to the southeastern United States, Cornsnakes are non-venomous constrictors that thrive in captivity and are a great introduction to snake keeping.
Quick Facts:
Size: 3–5 feet as adults
Lifespan: 15–20 years in captivity
Temperament: Docile, curious, and easy to handle
Experience Level: Excellent for beginners
Care & Habitat:
Cornsnakes do well in a secure enclosure (at least 20 gallons for adults) with both warm (around 85°F) and cool zones (mid-70s°F), plus a hide on each side. Use aspen, paper bedding, or coconut husk substrate, and provide a shallow water dish and climbing branches. They’re hardy and tolerate typical household humidity levels (40–60%).
Feeding:
They feed easily on appropriately sized frozen/thawed or live mice—typically once a week for juveniles, and every 7–10 days for adults. They rarely turn down a meal!
Fun Fact:
Cornsnakes get their name from the corn-like pattern on their bellies—and because they’re often found around grain stores and cornfields, where they help control rodent populations.

Why You’ll Love Them:
Cornsnakes are calm, manageable, and full of personality. With so many morphs and colors to choose from—and such easy care requirements—they're a favorite among reptile lovers of all ages. Whether it’s your first snake or your tenth, a Cornsnake makes a fantastic companion!
